In this paper I want to briefly sketch the long history of cheap penny prints for children against the background of social, economic and cultural development in the Dutch Republic. For the sake of time I will focus on a few impactful turning points and the possible changes that they broad about. But I am equally interested in the long term continuities and even counter-movements and inconsistencies. These changes and continuities demonstrate a broad range of diverging incentives to produce children’s prints, running from ideological, to commercial, to pragmatic considerations. My main argument is that the history of Dutch penny prints shows remarkable innovations in the field of children’s literature, but also suffered from the law of the inhibiting lead
