Description
Trudie Knijn and Barbara Oomen presented the ETHOS research programme and its findings tocolleagues of all disciplines of Utrecht University. The goal of the ‘Toogdag’ is to provide all
colleagues of Utrecht university and their social partners with an opportunity to connect, discuss
and exchange thoughts and ideas. The ETHOS presentation contains an outline of the programme,
the results of WP2 to WP 6 and the preliminary results regarding the building blocks of an
empirically founded European Theory of Justice and Fairness. These are summarized as:
* Building blocks, not an ideal but a non-ideal theory; that is an applicable and applied theory.
* A ‘what if’ theory; if redistributive, recognitive and representative justice should be done, what
then has to be changed?
* A theory that shows interrelationships between forms and types of justice and the tensions
between them.
* A theory that shows mechanisms of (in)justice in grounds, scale and site.
* A theory that shows boundary drawing of (in)justice in grounds, scope and site
* A theory that is constructionist in defining ‘vulnerability’ and ‘capability’.
* A theory that is fluent in defining European in a historical, philosophical and contemporary way.
Audience: 150 participants at the event; PhD’s and researchers of many academic disciplines.
