Labels for developmental disorders: blessing or curse?

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkAcademic

Description

The number of diagnoses for developmental disorders (especially ADHD en Autism Spectrum Disorder) has increased significantly over the last decades. The controversies surrounding the diagnoses are well-known and apply to many of the DSM-5 categories: they apply to a heterogeneous group of people, do not correlate with findings from neuroscience and genetics, and are of limited value in predicting natural course and best treatment options. As a result, in public and academic discussions, many advocate to abandon the use of diagnostic labels altogether, especially in the case of developmental disorder. On the other hand, the experience of those diagnosed shows that diagnostic labels can be extremely valuable: they help to explain, liberate, excuse, and promote self-acceptance. In this seminar we will discuss value of diagnostic labels in scientific, therapeutic, social and administrative contexts. Are they a blessing or a curse?
