How supervisory values are embedded in their decision-making climate

Description

Supervisory bodies are in the unique position to monitor the adequate functioning of institutions or entire markets and are meant to identify and mitigate risks that can harm customers, clients or society as a whole. To do this, supervisors are supposed to act both deliberately (i.e. decisions are made carefully and systematically) as well as decisively (i.e. decisions are made quickly and effective). However, the manner in which these supervisory values play out in practice has not yet been examined. The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent in which deliberation and decisiveness are embedded in supervisor’s decision-making climate. Deliberation as well as decisiveness are expected to uniquely contribute to decision quality and in turn to organisational performance. In order to examine this, an online questionnaire was conducted among both internal as well as external supervisors from various supervisory bodies (N = 252). Mediation analyses conducted via structural equation modelling proved to be significant, in which deliberation and decisiveness are both positively linked to vigilant decision-making and decision quality, and in turn to organisational performance. The predictive value of deliberation was stronger than of decisiveness. In order to enhance decision quality, organisational leaders and team managers of supervisory bodies are advised to actively stimulate deliberation and decisiveness as part of their decision-making climate.
