First preferences determine decisions of Supervisory and Managing board members when having incomplete information: a Hidden Profile field experiment.

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster/paper presentationAcademic

Description

The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which Supervisory and Managing board members are able to choose the optimal solution when having incomplete information. A hidden-profile field experiment was conducted in which Supervisory and Managing board members were randomly assigned to groups of three to participate in a candidate selection task (N = 30). Each group member received both shared as well as unique information about three candidates, whereafter they engaged in a group discussion in order to jointly choose the best candidate. The objectively best candidate could have only been found by the group if all unique information was pooled during group discussion. It appeared that groups were only able to choose the optimal solution if the majority of the group already preferred this candidate beforehand. Therefore, first preferences determine decisions of Supervisory and Managing board members when having incomplete information.
