Description
Key note addressThe re-use of pre-existing music may be as old as music itself, but applied to recent screen media, derivative applications have opened new associative effects that, I argue, are as yet not fully understood by film music theorists. Music history's pawnshop is a candy store for music directors, increasingly tipping the balance in favor of existing music. Musical themes, motives, structures and chord changes, even previously recorded tracks, recycled into newly created narrative constellations may, as known, inspire dense networks of personal experiences. Yet, a consistent association of songs with newly created mediatizations may also generate code codifiers in their own right, alternative to, and independent of, the cantus prius factus. I will address this prominent side effect of re-using pre-existing music within long running TV shows.
In this presentation, the developments of altered meanings and enriched associations will be analyzed via selected clips from, most notably, HBO and Netflix series, among these The Sopranos, and Strange Things. Edited songs, memes and mash-ups that are used in these series will be discussed through alternative readings of the music's function within their novel mediatized contexts.
