Doing transdisciplinarity in the WildlifeNL project

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster/paper presentationAcademic

Description

WildlifeNL is a transdisciplinary research (TDR) project that is dedicated to supporting/enabling/transitioning to a wildlife management system with low-conflict coexistence in the Netherlands. It brings together eighteen partners, including researchers from different disciplines and institutions and societal parties, such as nature conservation organizations, hunting association and farmers organization. This diversity is deliberate, as the project aims at co-creation combining different viewpoints and knowledges.

It was understood from the beginning that the actors’ views might differ widely on problem framing and understanding of the study’s context. A lot of attention is therefore given to supporting the early stages of TDR; laying the social and conceptual foundations for collaboration. Although the process was designed based on principles of TDR, unforeseen tensions arose when implementing this process. In this presentation we discuss our experiences and highlight some of these tensions, including incorporating interests in building a shared vision and the limitations of the funding context.
