Classrooms as micro-societies: Building societal citizenship through classroom citizenship

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkAcademic

Description

In this project we aim to uncover how teachers’ daily interactions with (ethnically) divers students influence students’ democratic citizenship outcomes, in terms of belonging, commitment, and acceptance. We will investigate this both at the classroom as well as the societal level, as we believe that when students develop classroom citizenship this transfers to national citizenship. Our specific focus will be on the teachers’ interactions with students of different ethnicities and how these influence students’ citizenship at both the classroom and national level. To do so, we will use a longitudinal design, following around 70 (multi-ethnic) classes for one school year. We will collect self-reports of teachers and students, observe the interactions, and use sociometrics to entangle the peer ecology in the classroom.
