Becoming a Virtuosa: Advice from Vienna, 1769

Description

My paper examines a hitherto unstudied piece of ephemera that, I argue, was deliberately preserved as an aide memoire by the young British glass armonica player Marianne Davies (c.1743/44 - bur. 1819). I illustrate how the unassuming anonymous document is in fact a record of career-developing advice given to Marianne by some of the most eminent musicians at the Vienna court in 1769.
