Architecture is not a Public Art, and why this matters

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkAcademic

Description

The question whether architecture is an art is important because it teaches us how to appreciate the ways in which architecture helps our culture shape our lifeworld. Culture is often mistakenly identified with art: culture is far broader than many think, comprising everything that forms our surroundings, such as cars, the layout of the roads, the width of the space allowed cars as opposed to bicycles or pedestrians – next to architecture, art proper, or the media. Much is part of culture that cannot be viewed as art. And for these non-art parts of culture the way we deal with them is not regulated in the manner in which art practice regulates our appreciation of works of art.
