Amnesty Lecture on Separation Movements

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talkPopular

Description

From organiser:
'Amnesty's first lecture of the year will focus on division and separation movements. We invited two experts who will contribute from two perspectives: a political science and a law school perspective. The expert from the political science department, Prof. Zaslove, will discuss topics such as identity, cleavages, social movements and referendum. These themes will be addressed within the context of two central questions: why certain regions want to separate themselves, and what the dynamics are behind these events. The expert from the law department, Prof. Ryngaert, will then talk about whether a referendum about separation, for example in Catalonia, can be seen as legal, and to what extent the national government has the right to condemn certain separation movements.

The lecture/debate will last for about an hour and a half. This indicates that there will be about 20 or 30 minutes for each speaker to give a short lecture about this topic. Afterwards, there will be time for questions from the audience and discussion.'
